Behaviour
The Carr Way
At Carr Infant School, we believe that a positive learning environment is built on clear expectations, consistency, and fairness. Our behaviour curriculum, The Carr Way, ensures that all children understand what is expected of them and how they can make positive contributions to our school community.
Our School Rules
Our three core rules underpin all behaviour expectations across the school:
- Ready – We are prepared for learning, listen carefully, and follow instructions.
- Respectful – We treat everyone kindly, take care of our environment, and speak politely.
- Safe – We move around school calmly, keep our hands and feet to ourselves, and follow safety rules.
These rules are reinforced daily in classrooms, corridors, the playground, and the dining hall to create a culture of respect, responsibility, and safety.
The Behaviour Ladder
The Behaviour Ladder is a visual tool that helps children understand and reflect on their behaviour throughout the day. Each child starts every session in the ‘Ready to Learn’ position, with opportunities to move up for positive behaviour or move down if support is needed.
Moving Up the Ladder
Children move up the ladder when they demonstrate our rules and values behaviour:
- +1 step: For showing they are Ready, Respectful, or Safe.
- +2 steps: For going above expectations and demonstrating our school values: Confidence, Communication, and Creativity.
- +3 steps: For something truly special, earning a visit to the Headteacher for recognition.
Children who reach the top of the ladder must continue to maintain their behaviour throughout the session to receive their reward.
Moving Down the Ladder
If a child makes the wrong choice, they are given a Chance to Change:
- Yellow Level (‘Chance to Change’) – A reminder to correct behaviour.
- Red Level (‘Support from Others’) – If a child continues to struggle with behaviour expectations, an adult will support them in making better choices.
At the end of each session, the ladder resets, giving all children a fresh start.
Rewards and Recognition
We celebrate and reward positive behaviour through:
-
Dojo Points:
- 1 Dojo for following school rules.
- 2 Dojos for demonstrating school values.
- 3 Dojos for reaching the top of the ladder and earning a Headteacher visit.
-
Verbal praise and encouragement from staff.
-
Celebration Assemblies to highlight outstanding behaviour and effort.
Consistency and Support
Our staff use set phrases when discussing behaviour with children to ensure consistency across the school. We believe in positive reinforcement and restorative approaches, helping children understand their choices and learn from their experiences.
By following The Carr Way, we create a happy, calm, and respectful school where every child can thrive.
