British Values
Fundamental British Values at Carr Infant School
The Department for Education (DfE) states that all schools must promote the following Fundamental British Values:
- Democracy – Understanding the importance of making decisions together. Children learn about democracy through school councils, voting, and opportunities to express their views.
- Rule of Law – Understanding the need for rules and laws to keep everyone safe and ensure fairness. In school, this is reinforced through classroom expectations, behaviour policies, and discussions about right and wrong.
- Individual Liberty – Encouraging children to make choices, express their opinions, and understand their rights and freedoms in a safe and supportive environment.
- Mutual Respect – Teaching children to be kind, considerate, and respectful to others, regardless of differences in background, beliefs, or opinions.
- Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs – Promoting understanding and acceptance of different cultures, religions, and ways of life. This is explored through RE lessons, assemblies, and celebrating cultural diversity within the school.
At Carr Infant School, these values are embedded throughout our curriculum, behaviour expectations, and school ethos, helping to prepare children for life in modern Britain.

We reinforce these values in a variety of ways:
Rule of Law
- Pupils learn what is right and wrong through classroom rules, school rules, and our Behaviour Policy, which is available on the Policies Page.
- Our Behaviour Ladder helps children understand that their actions have consequences and that they have the ability to make positive choices.
- We hold an Anti-Bullying Week each year and regularly explore themes of fairness, justice, and kindness in assemblies and PSHE lessons.
Democracy
- Our School Council, Eco-Warriors, and Play Leaders are selected through a democratic process, teaching pupils the value of representation and participation.
- Pupils are encouraged to share their opinions and take part in discussions to understand the importance of freedom of speech in a respectful and constructive way.
Tolerance of Difference
- We celebrate diversity through assemblies, themed weeks, and our curriculum, which introduces children to different cultures, traditions, and beliefs.
- Our Religious Education (RE) curriculum teaches pupils about different faiths and worldviews, promoting understanding and respect.
- We take any incidents of discrimination seriously and ensure that children understand the importance of treating everyone with fairness and kindness.
Mutual Respect
- Our school values—Confidence, Communication, and Creativity—are at the heart of how we interact with each other.
- We reward children for politeness, kindness, and positive behaviour through Dojo points and assemblies.
- All staff model mutual respect in their daily interactions with pupils, parents, and colleagues.
- We regularly take part in fundraising events for charities, such as Children in Need and Red Nose Day, to encourage compassion and empathy for others.
Individual Liberty
- We encourage children to make their own choices within a safe and supportive environment, helping them to develop independence and confidence.
- Our PSHE curriculum and assemblies teach children about their rights and responsibilities, including how to make safe and informed choices about their health and well-being.
- Our Behaviour Policy reinforces the idea that choices come with consequences, helping children to reflect on their behaviour and its impact on others.
At Carr Infant School, we believe that promoting British values helps to create a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful school community where all children can thrive.
