Communication and Language

At Carr Infant School, one of the prime areas of learning in our foundation curriculum is Communication and Language. We are committed to helping every child become a confident communicator—able to listen carefully, speak clearly, and understand others. Our teaching draws from Development Matters and prepares children with the skills they need for success in reading, writing, and wider social learning. As children move into Key Stage 1, this strong foundation supports their progress across the curriculum and helps them express their thoughts, ideas, and feelings with increasing fluency. We continue to develop communication through Literacy, but also through our Outdoor Education enrichment.

Foundation Stage: Communication and Language

In order to prepare children for the KS1 curriculum, we have clear EYFS end goals. These are drawn from Development Matters and informed by WellComm screening, which helps us identify and address individual speech, language, and communication needs through targeted support and intervention.

  • Listening, Attention and Understanding
The child can listen attentively in a range of situations, including small groups and whole-class sessions. They can follow two-step instructions and respond appropriately to questions, including 'how' and 'why'. Through WellComm screening, any gaps in understanding are identified early and supported by structured adult interaction and visual support strategies.
  • Speaking
The child can speak in full sentences using age-appropriate grammar and vocabulary, drawing on their experiences and learning. They are able to retell events and stories, ask relevant questions, and express their ideas clearly. WellComm interventions support children in extending sentence length, increasing vocabulary, and developing narrative skills through structured, play-based interactions.
  • Social Communication
The child can engage in conversations, take turns in discussion, and use talk to collaborate with peers and adults. They show awareness of the listener and adapt their language accordingly. Children requiring additional support benefit from WellComm strategies such as modelling, repetition, and focused group sessions to develop conversational confidence.
