Intent
At Carr Infant and Nursery School we want our children to love art and design. We aim to develop their artistic awareness in order to support their creativity and imagination. We believe that it is important for children to have regular opportunities to engage with art, allowing them to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. We plan for children to develop their skills in drawing, painting, sculpture and other crafts alongside learning and being inspired by a range of artists, craft makers and designers.
Implementation
- In EYFS, children have constant access to art materials as part of their daily provision. Staff plan opportunities for key skills to be modelled and also for children to experiment with a range of materials and equipment. Staff encourage children to draw from their imagination and observation and build their confidence. Children are encouraged to develop their communication and language skills through talking about their creations and sharing these with others to build confidence and raise self-esteem. We aim for children to feel proud of their creations and display their art work in the classroom and around school.
- In KS1, each child has a sketchbook. We give the child ownership of their sketchbook in order to foster their sense of creativity. Children use their sketchbooks to make initial sketches, develop skills, record ideas and develop opinions. We encourage children to focus on the process of creating art rather than the product.
- Every child is given the opportunity to learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, sculpture through the exploration of an initial key artist, craft maker or designer and their work.
- Staff encourage communication through in-depth discussion, the pupils explore how their art can share similarities with famous art and use subject-specific vocabulary to discuss key artworks and their own work.
- Teachers follow a clear progression of skills which ensures all pupils are challenged in line with their year group expectations and are given the opportunity to build on their prior knowledge. Staff nurture a culture of confidence in children’s abilities by sharing and displaying their art work around the school.
Impact
Children develop a love and appreciation of art, enjoy expressing themselves through different mediums and feel confident and proud about their work and abilities.
