The government has provided additional funding since 2013, to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This ‘Sports Premium’ is ring-fenced and can therefore only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.
Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but schools have been given the freedom to choose how they do this. Possible uses for the funding might include:
Since September 2013, schools have been asked to account for how they spend their additional, ring-fenced funding. OFSTED strengthened the coverage of PE and sport within their ‘Inspectors’ Handbook’ guidance so that both schools and inspectors know how sport and PE will be assessed as part of the school’s overall provision.
Schools are also required to include details of their provision of PE and sport on their website, alongside details of their broader curriculum, so that parents can compare sports provision between schools, both within and beyond the school day. Further information can be found at the Department for Education’s Sports Premium website. For details of the Carr Infants PE curriculum, please see the Curriculum area of our website.
